Crew a yacht at sea

On a yacht at sea everyone has a job, from steering to sail handling to cooking, and on a live-aboard course you learn them by doing them. Neither of the standard beginner courses, the RYA Competent Crew in the UK and ASA 101 Basic Keelboat in the US, asks for any experience.

Someone who has done it

Joanne Currie and Sue Smith sailed in the Clipper Race, which runs its own crew training; these courses are a separate first step.

How to start

  1. Read the course page for your country and find a school near the water you want to sail on.
  2. Ask the school what the price includes, what kit it lends and whether the course has a night sail.
  3. Book a short taster sail first if you have never been on a yacht.
