Let a patch of lawn grow wild

Stop mowing one corner and the lawn shows what was in it all along, from daisies, clovers and bird's-foot-trefoil to taller meadow flowers if you leave it longer. The charity Plantlife suggests keeping two or three lengths of grass, so that short turf, meadow and long cover sit side by side.

How to start

  1. Read Plantlife's No Mow May page for what to leave and when to cut.
  2. Mark out a patch of lawn to leave uncut and keep mowing a neat path around it.
  3. Note which flowers and insects appear each week, and check for wildlife before any later cut.
