Train as a Master Gardener volunteer
A friend has invited you to do this with them.
Extension Master Gardeners are volunteers trained through a state land-grant university and its Cooperative Extension Service to pass on research-based gardening advice. Once certified they staff helplines and plant clinics and run workshops, which makes it a horticulture course with a public job attached.

How to start
- Open the Extension Master Gardener site and use its Find a Master Gardener Program listing to locate your state's programme.
- Read your state or county extension office's page for the training timetable and the volunteer hours it asks for.
- Apply for the next intake and visit a local plant clinic to see the volunteers at work.
Where to go
We opened this link on 7 October 2026 and found it to be what we say. Dates, places and prices are on the official page, where they stay up to date.
Plan this
Pick a day, or a month, and we will set out how to get ready, step by step, with a date and a reason for each. Courses and classes have start dates and can fill up, so the plan begins with finding and booking one. Kit comes after the first session, once you know what you need.
