Climb to the Monastery at Petra

Petra was carved into the rock of southern Jordan by the Nabataeans more than 2,000 years ago, and the Monastery (Ad-Deir) is one of its great monuments. About 800 steps lead up to it from the old city, past tombs, shrines and wide mountain views.

How to start

  1. Walk in through the Siq to the Treasury first; the Jordan Tourism Board says that trail takes up to an hour from the Visitors' Center.
  2. Start the Monastery trail at the stairway by Qasr al-Bint and allow about an hour and a half to an hour and three-quarters each way.
  3. Take sturdy shoes, plenty of water, sunscreen and a hat, and think about going up in the late afternoon, when the setting sun lights the façade.
