Hike to Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) in Norway

A friend has invited you to do this with them.
Preikestolen is a flat-topped rock that stands 604 metres above the Lysefjord, and the hike to it is about 8 km there and back with some 500 metres of climbing. More than 300,000 people make the walk each year for one of the best-known views in Norway.

How to start

- Get to Preikestolen Fjellstue, the mountain lodge where the hike starts, by bus from Stavanger or by car and ferry.
- Go in the hiking season, May to October; from November to April you need special equipment and a guide.
Where to go
We opened this link on 2 November 2026 and found it to be what we say. Dates, places and prices are on the official page, where they stay up to date.
Plan this
Pick a day, or a month, and we will set out how to get ready, step by step, with a date and a reason for each. The hard part of a day out is the timing: the right season, tickets and getting there. The plan watches the calendar for you.
