You navigate between checkpoints on a detailed map, choosing your own route, so thinking counts as much as speed. Courses are colour-coded by difficulty and the beginner ones keep to paths.

How to start

  1. Read British Orienteering's newcomers guide or find a club through Orienteering USA.
  2. Pick a local event and enter a beginner course such as White or Yellow.
  3. Walk it the first time and concentrate on keeping the map lined up with the ground.
