Spend a night in a mountain bothy
A friend has invited you to do this with them.
A bothy is a simple shelter in remote country, kept up by the volunteers of the Mountain Bothies Association for anyone who loves wild and lonely places. Expect no tap, no beds and no lights, so you carry in everything you would take camping except the tent, and share the floor with whoever else walks in.

How to start
- Read the Mountain Bothies Association's What is a Bothy page and its Bothy Code before you plan anything.
- Choose a bothy from the Association's list by area, in Scotland, northern England or Wales, and plan the walk in on a map.
- Pack a sleeping bag and mat, stove, food, candles and a spade, and carry out every scrap of rubbish.
Where to go
We opened these links on 7 October 2026 and found them to be what we say. Dates, places and prices are on the official page, where they stay up to date.
Plan this
Pick a day, or a month, and we will set out how to get ready, step by step, with a date and a reason for each. The hard part of a day out is the timing: the right season, tickets and getting there. The plan watches the calendar for you.
