Try stone carving

With a mallet, a few chisels and a block of soft limestone, a beginner can carve a small relief panel in a week or less and take it home. Short courses lend the tools and supply the stone, so you can find out whether you enjoy it before buying anything.

What it's really like

Beginners usually start on soft stone. At the Building Crafts College in Stratford, London, students learn the safe use of traditional hand tools, work in soft limestone, then carve a traditional low-relief or sunk design to take home, in a class of no more than six.

West Dean College's weekend introduction uses Maltese limestone, a soft sedimentary rock, and soapstone, with three projects including an oak leaf relief. Tools, oils and two pieces of limestone are included, and the studio is open on one side, so it asks for warm clothing.

In the US, the Carving Studio & Sculpture Center in West Rutland, Vermont, a non-profit that has taught carving for more than 35 years, runs a two-day introductory workshop using the studio's tools and a moderate piece of Vermont marble.
