The Larapinta Trail runs 231 km along the West MacDonnell Ranges from the Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the summit of Mt Sonder, past gorges and waterholes such as Simpsons Gap, Ellery Creek Big Hole and Ormiston Gorge. It is split into 12 sections, so you can walk a single day, a weekend or the whole thing in about 20 days.

How to start

  1. Read the Northern Territory parks page on planning a Larapinta walk and pick a section or itinerary that suits your time and fitness.
  2. Book and pay your walking and camping fees online, with a designated campsite for every night you will be on the trail.
  3. Arrange transfers or a drop-off before you start, as some trailheads need a high-clearance vehicle.
