Take a cycling confidence lesson
A friend has invited you to do this with them.
Bikeability, the cycle training programme run for the Department for Transport, is best known in schools but also teaches adults, one to one or in a small group. Its instructors say they can get even very nervous riders pedalling in under an hour.

How to start
- Enter your postcode on the Bikeability Find Cycle Training page to find a provider in England.
- Ask the provider for an adult session and say whether you are a complete beginner or want to ride on roads.
- Borrow or hire a bike for the lesson if you do not own one, and bring a helmet.
Where to go
We opened this link on 7 October 2026 and found it to be what we say. Dates, places and prices are on the official page, where they stay up to date.
Plan this
Pick a day, or a month, and we will set out how to get ready, step by step, with a date and a reason for each. Courses and classes have start dates and can fill up, so the plan begins with finding and booking one. Kit comes after the first session, once you know what you need.
