Go on a guided bird walk

A good guide hears a bird long before anyone sees it, and an hour beside one teaches more than a season with a field guide. Nature reserves and local bird groups lead walks for beginners, where the pleasure is as much in learning how to look as in what turns up.

How to start

  1. Use the RSPB reserve finder in the UK, or the Audubon Near You page in the US, to find a reserve, centre or chapter within reach.
  2. Check that reserve's or chapter's own page for its next guided walk and book a place if booking is needed.
  3. Borrow or pack a pair of binoculars and ask the leader which birds to listen for.
