Step onto a judo mat

Judo is a grappling art built on balance and timing, in which a smaller person can throw a larger one by using their momentum against them. Beginners start by learning how to fall safely, and the national governing bodies in Britain and the United States both run club finders.

How to start

  1. Search the British Judo club finder or USA Judo's Find a Club list for a club near you.
  2. Ask the club whether it runs adult beginner or taster sessions and whether you can borrow a judo suit.
  3. Go along to a first class and expect to spend much of it learning breakfalls.
