Take a Learn to Row course

Rowing is a rare sport where a whole crew has to move as one, and you feel it the moment the boat runs smoothly. British Rowing says most courses run over six weekly sessions, by which point you can steer, stop and turn a boat.

Someone who has done it

Dave Bell rowed alone from Peru to Kenya; a club beginner course is where most rowers take their first strokes.

How to start

  1. Find a club through British Rowing's Learn to Row page or the USRowing club finder.
  2. Ask when the next beginner course starts and book a place.
  3. Wear close-fitting layers you can move in, as no special kit is needed at first.
