Learn to fence

Fencing is often compared to chess, because each bout is a contest of feints, timing and second-guessing as much as speed. Clubs teach foil, épée or sabre, and most lend beginners the mask, jacket and weapon.

How to start

  1. Search the British Fencing club finder or the USA Fencing Club Finder Tool for a club that runs beginners' sessions.
  2. Ask the club which weapon its beginners' course teaches and what kit it lends.
  3. Turn up in tracksuit trousers and indoor trainers, as the club supplies the protective clothing.
