Learn to ice skate
A friend has invited you to do this with them.
Gliding on a blade a few millimetres wide is a skill you build in small, definite steps, which is why the national programmes are set out in levels. Skate UK is taught at rinks across Britain, and Learn to Skate USA has an adult curriculum of six levels.

How to start
- Use the rink finder on the British Ice Skating site, or ask your local rink in the US whether it teaches the Learn to Skate USA adult curriculum.
- Enrol on a beginners' course and hire skates from the rink for the first few weeks.
- Wear gloves, long sleeves and thin socks, and arrive early to lace your boots firmly.
Where to go
We opened these links on 7 October 2026 and found them to be what we say. Dates, places and prices are on the official page, where they stay up to date.
Plan this
Pick a day, or a month, and we will set out how to get ready, step by step, with a date and a reason for each. Courses and classes have start dates and can fill up, so the plan begins with finding and booking one. Kit comes after the first session, once you know what you need.
