Take your first motorcycle training course

Compulsory basic training, known as CBT, is the course most learners in Britain must take before riding a moped or motorcycle on the road, and it is not a test you pass or fail. In the US, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic RiderCourse provides the motorcycle and takes beginners from straight-line riding to swerving and emergency braking.

How to start

  1. Read the GOV.UK guide to CBT or the Motorcycle Safety Foundation's Basic RiderCourse page for your country.
  2. Use the GOV.UK "Find a motorcycle or moped CBT course" service, or the Foundation's "Find a Basic RiderCourse Near You" section, to choose a training provider.
  3. Book a course with that provider and ask which helmet, gloves and clothing you need to bring.
