Learn to skateboard

A skateboard is an inexpensive way to learn a whole new way of moving, and every session gives you something to measure, from your first rolling stop to a timed run through a line of cones. Slalom, racing between cones, needs no tricks at all.

Someone who has done it

Darren Miles has skated since 1977 and took up slalom in 2020; a lesson is the first step for anyone new to a board.

How to start

  1. Get a helmet, wrist guards and knee and elbow pads before you get a board.
  2. Book a lesson with a qualified coach, or join an adult session at a skatepark.
  3. Learn to stop, slow down and turn on smooth, flat ground before you try anything faster.
