Take a Kauaʻi shelter dog out for the day

Kauaʻi Humane Society lets visitors take a shelter dog out for the day, to a trail or one of the many beaches that allow dogs, and bring it back by 5pm. The dog gets exercise and sunshine; you get a guide who is thrilled with every smell.

How to start

  1. Read the Field Trips page on the Kauaʻi Humane Society site and watch the instructional video.
  2. Schedule a pick-up between 10am and noon (walk-ins are accepted most days); the shelter asks for a donation, which was $75 when we checked in November 2026, and takes a card deposit.
  3. Ask staff where to go that day, and be back before 5pm.

Where to go

We opened this link on 4 November 2026 and found it to be what we say. Dates, places and prices are on the official page, where they stay up to date.
