Take up beekeeping

A hive is a working society of tens of thousands, and learning to read it is absorbing in a way few hobbies are. Local associations pair newcomers with experienced keepers, so you learn at an apiary before you buy anything.

Moderate£100 to £500 / $130 to $650A year or moreOutdoorsAlone or with othersUK and USCourses often start in winter; the bee season is spring to autumn

How to start

  1. Find your local beekeeping association and ask about taster days or a beginners' course.
  2. Handle bees at the association apiary before deciding to keep your own.
  3. Complete a full season with a mentor, then record your first hive inspection alone.
