Catch your first wave

Surfing compresses a great deal into a few seconds, from paddling and timing to the scramble to your feet, and the first wave you ride to the beach is hard to forget. A lesson starts on the sand and moves into the small broken waves near the shore.

How to start

  1. Pick a school from the Surf Schools map on the Surfing England site.
  2. Book a beginner group lesson, which normally includes a soft board and a wetsuit.
  3. Practise the pop-up on the sand until the coach is happy before you paddle out.
