Cycle the Great Allegheny Passage

This 150-mile rail-trail through Pennsylvania and Maryland follows old railway lines on a crushed limestone surface, away from traffic. It links with the C&O Canal Towpath, so the ambitious can carry on to Washington, D.C.

How to start

  1. Read the Rails to Trails Conservancy's account of the trail and decide how many days to take.
  2. Book places to stay in trail towns along the way and sort out bike transport.
  3. Ride two consecutive days on gravel paths with loaded panniers before you go.
