Walk the Laugavegur trail in Iceland
A friend has invited you to do this with them.
The Laugavegur crosses Iceland's southern highlands for about 55 km (34 miles), from the hot springs of Landmannalaugar to the birch woods of Þórsmörk, past rhyolite mountains, obsidian fields and black sand deserts. Most people walk it in four days, sleeping in mountain huts or camping beside them.

How to start
- Read Ferðafélag Íslands' trail page and plan the four stages between huts.
- Book huts or campsites well ahead, as they sell out and walkers are expected to have confirmed bookings before setting off.
- Plan for wading, since at least three rivers on the route have no bridge, and pack layers and waterproofs for fast-changing weather.
Where to go
We opened this link on 2 November 2026 and found it to be what we say. Dates, places and prices are on the official page, where they stay up to date.
Plan this
Pick a day, or a month, and we will set out how to get ready, step by step, with a date and a reason for each. Projects run over months and stall without a rhythm, so the plan sets milestones you can see.
